Having managed to paint this scene with just three colours plus white, I challenged myself to reduce the palette still further. The two colours used here were pthalo blue and cadmium red light. As these are almost opposite one another on the colour wheel, it’s possible to combine them to produce a shade that is almost black, so a full range of values is possible.
