John Williams (that’s me) is a retired local government officer from the UK, now living in the Netherlands. As a boy I enjoyed drawing and painting, but then real life caught up with me; marriage, family, job, mortgage, that kinda stuff. But I promised myself that when I retired I’d go back to art, and that’s what I’ve done. I haven’t had any art lessons since leaving school; everything I’ve learned in recent years is thanks to the University of YouTube.

After about ten years of painting, the attic is getting a bit full and messy, so the time has come to find a wider public for my work/hobby, perhaps even to find new homes for some of the paintings. Hence this web site.

Most of the paintings are landscapes, and most of these depict places near to where I live. I’m very enthusiastic about my adopted country, which is very diverse and beautiful given its dearth of mountains. Think of the ‘Golden Age’ painters, all those city, sky and seascapes, not to mention windmills.

As well as the paintings themselves, there will be background information about the places depicted, perhaps with a little history and geography. So the paintings may be accompanied by descriptions or explanations, but there will also be a blog (one of my other hobbies being writing) in which I’ll share my experiences and methods of painting and also my love for this great country. Unfortunately, this blog will not be translated into Dutch; my own written Dutch isn’t great, and the cost of having it automatically translated is beyond my budget.
